Martin Luther King Day didn't work here.

My partner is the sub postmaster in this little village in the west Texas desert. Early last month she came to work and found taped to the door a hand written sign saying, “We will be closed for Martin Luther Day”.

She laughed and walked in, ready for work. “Hey , we need to make up a new sign!”

The response of the postmaster was “Why?”

She had never heard of Martin Luther King and had no idea why their was a holiday to honor him. “Oh, I thought it was just Martin Luther”, she said.

Whaaaat??? She is a nice 50+ year old lady from a city in east Texas, a republican but not radical, religious but not fanatic, homeschooled her kids, is pleasant to all, and is “not really political”.

We have failed, Texas has failed, and I feel really dismayed by this. I have waited weeks to write this, hoping that I could draw some conclusions or make something of this episode.

But I really don’t know what to say.
